Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian was born in Canada but grew up in the US. She's worked as media critic since. Feminist Frequency was founded by Sarkeesian. It hosts video clips featuring commentary and analysis of the depictions of women in popular culture. Anita Sarkeesian has been a blogger, critic of the media and award-winning feminist for over a decade. Feminist Frequency investigates how women are represented in the popular media. Dispelling stereotypes of women is the main goals of her work. But, she also discusses issues of specific harassment of women on the internet and for other groups that are marginalized. Sarkeesian holds a York University master's in social philosophy, political and philosophical thinking. Apart from being a well-known public speaker she has made speeches at the TEDxWomen conference and the United Nations Broadband Working Group. Passionate about issues of gender identity and feminism from the age of 7, she started her site Feminist Frequency in 2009, while studying at the University. Someone who hoped to start a web-series examining the gender-based representation in video games was targeted in an online campaign. The woman was not stopped by the assault, actually, it just reinforced her desire to become an expert on media and feminism. To honor the numerous achievements she's made for feminism, she is recognized with numerous awards. Anita Sarkeesian has been a media critic for several years and founded Feminist Frequency. This educational nonprofit explores women's representations in pop culture narratives.
